Criteria and Hazardous Air Pollutant Monitoring

Two separate MDEQ programs provides for collection of ambient air samples and determination of the identity and quantity of criteria and hazardous air pollutants present in a variety of samples.

Ambient Air Monitoring for Criteria Air Pollutants
  • Collection and analysis of air quality data is a basic need of any effective air pollution control program.
  • The criteria pollutants, particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, ozone and nitrogen dioxide are currently measured at numerous locations in Mississippi.
  • The ambient air quality data are used to verify compliance with or progress being made toward compliance with standards for ambient air quality; to support development of strategies to reduce air contaminants; and to assess the subsequent effectiveness of reduction strategies in attaining and maintaining air quality standards.

Hazardous Air Pollutant Monitoring
Ambient air monitoring for hazardous air pollutants was performed at various locations throughout the state from May of 2001 through March of 2008. MDEQ’s purpose was to characterize air quality for concentrations of common hazardous air pollutant emissions in areas of more likely incidence of elevated levels. The data produced from this effort, which is available through the link below, provides a favorable picture of air quality for the pollutants and areas monitored, indicating no problem or troublesome conditions. While the monitoring activity has ended, further study and planning continue toward an overall strategy and comprehensive plan for evaluating and addressing any ambient air quality concerns for toxic or hazardous air pollutant emission conditions.
