Cleanup and Remediation

The primary function of the Mississippi Groundwater Assessment and Remediation Division is overseeing the assessment, cleanup or remediation of contaminated sites. These actions help protect Mississippi's groundwater resources, the public health, and the environment.

Definitions
(as stated in the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) glossary of Terms of the Environment) -
Cleanup -
actions taken to deal with a release or threat of release of a hazardous substance that could affect humans and/or the environment. The term "cleanup" is sometimes used interchangeable with the terms remedial action, removal action, response action, or corrective action.

Remediation -
the action to cleanup, mitigate, correct, abate, minimize, eliminate, control, treat, remove or to implement institutional and/or engineering controls in order to prevent the spreading migartion, leaking, leaching, volatization, spilling, transport, exposure, or further release of a contaminant to the environment in order to
protect public health or the environment.
