| History of Program |
The MS Pesticide Container Recycling Program began as a pilot project in 1989 in one county when the Mississippi agricultural community recognized the need for an acceptable method of disposing of these containers which would protect the environment and at the same time eliminate the wasteful and landfill practice of landfilling.
Supporters of the program included:
An interested farmer and aerial applicator offered his cotton gin as a site for baling and storing collected containers prior to shipment for processing. Baling proved to be unsatisfactory and a more efficient system of granulating or chipping was adopted. Equipment and systems were purchased and local programs established whereby the portable granulation equipment could be moved to participating counties for chipping collected containers on site.
