| The Division of Water Resources Data Management is responsible for the management of data collected during various groundwater and surface water investigations, as well as data collected in the course of permitting groundwater and surface water withdrawals in the state. The division is actively working in the following areas: |
| Water Resources Information Management System (WRIMS) |
| For the past three years, the Office of Land and Water Resources has been working with the Mississippi Automated Resources Information System (MARIS) on the design and development of a new data management system (WRIMS) that will combine and standardize information into a major relational database. The major component of WRIMS is in its final testing. The remaining geographic component of the database is being designed to enhance the geographic information system (GIS) capabilities and needs of the Office. |
| Water-Use Program |
| The Water-Use Program was initiated in 1992 to compile site-specific groundwater withdrawal data from the aquifers in the state. The goal of the Water-Use Program is to gather existing pumpage information from various sources and compile the data into a single database. To achieve this goal, Staff conducts an annual survey of well owners to compile current pumpage information. This valuable information is used by Staff to monitor responses in aquifers and to evaluate various water management issues. The data is available to the public and various governmental agencies upon request. |
| Locational Data Improvement Program |
| The agency’s GIS [system] uses locational coordinates to visually display geographic representations on maps. These depictions on a map, along with data associated with the various points and coverages, facilitate environmental analysis and decision-making related to the management of water resources. This program attempts to enhance the accuracy of this data while encouraging the use of global positioning system (GPS) technology in the field to obtain accurate locations of wells and surface water withdrawal points. |
| Quality Assurance and Control Effort |
| It is the responsibility of this division to make sure that information input into computer databases is accurate. This time-consuming QA/QC effort requires that information entered into the agency database be checked for errors and overall consistency. |
