Pecan Grove landfill gas-to-energy project is Mississippi’s first operational project that came on line under the state’s Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP). In this project, gas from Pecan Grove Landfill (located near Pass Christian, MS) is captured and treated at the landfill property and then piped to a DuPont facility located near DeLisle, MS.
Dallas-based Toro Energy, Inc. developed this project in partnerships with DuPont, Waste Management of Mississippi, Inc., CPL-LEI Systems, Inc., EPA, MDEQ, MPUS and MDOT. The project involved laying of pipeline over 5.0 miles and is designed to process 3,200 scfm of LFG. DuPont currently uses 2,700 scfm of treated landfill gas (LFG) to fire boilers at its Delisle plant. Seamless operations and switching of natural gas and LFG are paramount to control the plant operations. A direct benefit from this project is the removal of a significant amount of methane, a greenhouse gas (GHG) from the environment. The reduction of GHG from this project would be equivalent to:
· Removing emissions from 6,500 cars on the road for a year
· Reducing oil consumption by 79,000 barrels per year
· Heating 20,000 homes per year
· Reducing coal consumption by 160 rails per year
· Planting 10,000 acres of forest per year
In addition to the environmental benefits, DuPont will save more than million dollars annually in energy costs. |
