MDEQ Lifts Two Contact Advisories and Issues Two More

(JACKSON, Miss.)The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), through its Beach Monitoring Program, issued two water contact advisories Friday for Stations 1 and 9. Two other advisories previously issued are still in effect.

These segments of beach are not closed; however, there may be an increased risk of illness associated with swimming in these areas.

MDEQ is working closely with local officials to advise residents that the water in the following locations may have high bacteria levels:

►Station 1 -- Lakeshore Beach near Lakeshore Drive -- from the Silver Slipper Casino east to Poinset.

►Station 9 -- Gulfport Harbor Beach -- from 20th Avenue east to Thornton Avenue.

These stations remain under advisory:

►Station 2 – Buccaneer State Park Beach -- the extent is from 100 yards west of the sign eastward to 100 yards east of the sign.

►Station 7A -- Long Beach -- from Oak Gardens Avenue to Girard Avenue.

MDEQ also lifted water contact advisories Friday for two beach monitoring stations. Water samples at these stations show the areas have attained acceptable bacteria levels. The advisories have been lifted for the following stations:

►Station 12A – Biloxi West Central Beach -- from Travia Street east to Iberville Drive.

►Station 19 -- Pascagoula Beach West -- from Oliver Street eastward to Westwood Street.

Swimmers are reminded that the Beach Task Force has a standing recommendation that swimming not occur during or within 24 hours of a significant rainfall event.
