(JACKSON, Miss.) – The Governor’s Delta Sustainable Water Resources Task Force will hold two meetings in September to inform producers in the Mississippi Delta of ongoing and future activities to help address declining water levels in the Mississippi River Valley Alluvial Aquifer. Lunch will be served at both meetings.
•September 26 — at the Clarksdale Country Club (905 Friars Point Rd.) from 10:00 to 2:00.
•September 27 — at the Capps Technology Center in Indianola (920 Highway 82) from 10:00 to 2:00.
The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) will present information on 2016 water use, compliance with permit requirements to implement irrigation efficiency practices, and the status of alternative practices and projects being evaluated. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) will discuss preliminary groundwater modeling results comparing the relative effects on aquifer water levels of selected possible alternatives and show analyses of geophysical data collected. In addition, the USGS will describe additional data collection efforts planned for Federal Fiscal Year 2018 and plans for improving the regional groundwater model. Lee Atwill of the Delta Research and Extension Center will discuss irrigation efficiency practices.
The Task Force, which includes the Yazoo Mississippi Delta Joint Water Management District, Delta Council, Delta F.A.R.M., Mississippi Farm Bureau, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Mississippi Soil and Water Conservation Commission, and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, was formed to develop and implement actions to sustain water resources for agriculture, fisheries, and wildlife in the Delta.
