MDEQ Issues Temporary Advisory For Brashear Creek In Ridgeland

(JACKSON, Miss.) –The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) issued a temporary water contact advisory Friday for a section of Brashear Creek in Ridgeland from Rice Road to the confluence with the Pearl River (see attached map). The Ross Barnett Reservoir is not affected.

The advisory was issued due to a sewage bypass near the intersection of Lake Harbor Drive and Harbor Drive when excessive rainfall caused a temporary bypass pump to fail. The city is currently working to resolve the issues.

MDEQ recommends that people avoid water contact recreation such as swimming or wading in these waters. In addition, people should avoid eating fish from these waters until further notice.

MDEQ staff will take water samples Monday as rainfall has an impact on collecting accurate samples. MDEQ will monitor bacteria levels and water quality in the creek and will revise the advisory as needed.
