MDEQ LIFTS WATER CONTACT ADVISORY FOR TURKEY CREEK
(JACKSON, Miss.) -- The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) Friday lifted a temporary water contact advisory issued October 15 for Turkey Creek in Harrison County. Two sets of samples taken by MDEQ staff from Ohio Street to the mouth of the creek indicate bacteria levels have remained within water quality standards since the repair was completed on October 16.
The advisory extended from Ohio Avenue northeast to Bernard Bayou in Gulfport and was issued due to a major force main break off Louisiana Avenue.
MDEQ staff will again sample the creek after the next rainfall to determine if runoff from the wetlands area impacted by the leak causes an increase in bacteria levels. If necessary, an advisory would be reissued.
