MDEQ REVIEWING KUHLMAN CORRECTIVE ACTION PLAN
(JACKSON, Miss.) – The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) announced that it has received and is reviewing the Corrective Action Plan for groundwater cleanup that describes activities to remediate the source area and the impacts to groundwater beneath the Kuhlman Electric Corporation (KEC) facility in Crystal Springs. The Corrective Action Plan is a proposed plan to remediate the contaminated groundwater and provides a methodology to cleanup the groundwater. It was prepared in response to an order issued by the Mississippi Commission on Environmental Quality on July 6, 2010.
In addition, MDEQ and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are also reviewing the Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment report for Lake Chautauqua which evaluates whether humans and/or the environment have been adversely impacted and what level of risk exists due to the low levels of Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the lake’s sediments.
The MDEQ’s Office of Community Engagement will soon schedule an availability session to allow the public to review the plan and to receive updates on current cleanup activities.
