MDEQ To Host America Recycles Day
Event will take place in Downtown Jackson on November 15

(JACKSON, Miss.)
-- The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), along with other partners, will host an America Recycles Day event on November 15 at Smith Park in downtown Jackson from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event promotes the benefits of recycling and will provide information on how to set up recycling programs.

Area residents, businesses, agencies, institutions, organizations, and the general public are invited to attend and interact with numerous booths and exhibits explaining the environmental and economic benefits of recycling in fun and educational ways.

The event will also promote several organizations in the metropolitan area that include recycling and reuse in their mission and requests the public bring various items:

●Dress for Success – people are encouraged to bring gently used brown or black ladies’ dress shoes to help underprivileged women with professional attire for interviews and jobs.

●Stewpot – bring canned goods to help low income people and families. MDEQ will be promoting safe donation practices for usable food from area grocery stores and restaurants to reduce the amount of food waste going into landfills.

●Cell Phones for Soldiers - Bring used and discarded cell phones to donate to this non-profit organization. The used cell phones are recycled and the funds provide cost-free communication services to active duty military and veterans.

●MDEQ, in cooperation with Brown Bottling Group, will be collecting discarded newspapers at bins around the park that will be donated to the Community Animal Rescue and Adoption, Inc. (CARA) animal shelter for use as animal bedding.

●An e-waste collection event is being conducted by Keep Jackson Beautiful and Entergy at the Farmers’ Market on High Street from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

For additional information on the event, contact Joseph Paige or Cassandra Johnson with MDEQ at 601-961-5171.
