(JACKSON, Miss.) -- The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) recently announced the award of Materials Conservation Grants to six local governments. These grants are made available through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The grants will fund costs associated with local materials conservation and recycling programs sponsored by the local governments. The local governments that have been awarded grants by MDEQ are as follows:
●Calhoun County -- $78,000;
●City of Oxford -- $100,000;
●City of Pascagoula -- $40,000;
●City of Pearl -- $78,837;
●City of Quitman -- $43,555; and,
●City of Starkville -- $50,000.
The grants will be used by these local governments to assist with expanding or starting new recycling programs and services in their areas.
“We are encouraged to see the increased awareness in recycling and materials conservation programs and in the energy conservation and economic benefits that these programs have across our state.” said Trudy Fisher, MDEQ Executive Director.
MDEQ has released a second Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for the remainder of the money that was not awarded through the first FOA. The deadline for requesting an award under the second FOA is January 21, 2011. For more information, contact Luis Murillo at 601-961-5372 or visit www.deq.state.ms.us/solidwaste.
