MDEQ LIFTS ADVISORY FOR PELAHATCHIE CREEK

(JACKSON, Miss.) – The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) today lifted a temporary water contact advisory issued February 23, 2012 for Pelahatchie Creek in Morton. This advisory had extended from Moore Street (Old Highway 481) downstream to U.S. Highway 80. This precautionary advisory was issued as a result of the discharge of an estimated 50,000 to 100,000 gallons of untreated wastewater near the creek. The City of Morton responded promptly and effectively to prevent most of the wastewater from entering the creek, and then cleaned up the spilled material.

Monitoring by MDEQ staff confirmed that there was no significant impact on the creek as a result of the incident.
