MDEQ Issues Beach Closure in Gulfport

(Jackson, Miss.) – The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), through its Beach Monitoring Program, issued a precautionary beach closure Wednesday for a section of beach in Gulfport.

The closure stretches from Teagarden Road on the west to the old VA property on the east. This segment includes Beach Sampling Station 10A which is the Courthouse Road Beach near the Courthouse Road west parking lot.

This precautionary closure is issued due to a sewage discharge from the City of Gulfport collection system. The city reported discovery of a spill which entered a storm drain leading to the beach. The cause of the spill has been corrected, however, sewage may have reached the Mississippi Sound.

MDEQ advises residents not to consume any seafood collected from these nearshore waters until further notice. MDEQ will monitor the water and lift the closure when bacteria levels indicate conditions are safe for water contact.
