MDEQ ANNOUNCES HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE DISPOSAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR THREE AREAS OF COAHOMA COUNTY

(JACKSON, Miss.) -- The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), announced today that there will be curbside pick up next week for household hazardous wastes for the flood impacted residents of Washington County in the Burkes, Conservation, and Ward Lake areas. Household hazardous wastes are chemicals used to maintain homes, yards, or used in equipment.

MDEQ staff and contractors will be conducting the curbside pick-up of household hazardous wastes or hazardous materials Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (July 6, 7, and 8). Residents should place any household hazardous waste on the public road right of way for curbside pick-up on or before these dates. These wastes do not have to be bagged in order to be collected.

Accepted wastes will include household hazardous wastes such as household chemicals, insecticides, poisons, used oil and gasoline, paint, herbicides, solvents, and also other wastes such as thermostats, lighting ballasts, computers, televisions, and cell phones.

For questions, contact the MDEQ Solid Waste staff at 601-961-5171, or visit www.deq.state.ms.us/solidwaste.
