MDEQ ISSUES TEMPORARY ADVISORY FOR CANEY CREEK IN JACKSON
(JACKSON, Miss.) –The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) issued a temporary water contact advisory Tuesday for Caney Creek in south Jackson. This advisory applies to Caney Creek from Highway 18 downstream to McClure Road.
MDEQ recommends that people avoid water contact recreation such as swimming or wading in these waters. In addition, people should avoid eating fish from these waters until further notice.
This advisory is being issued due to a collapsed 8 inch sewer line resulting in the discharge of untreated wastewater into the creek. The discharge is located southeast of Highway 18 and south of TV Road. The stream flows to the southeast and passes under Raymond Road, Robinson Road Extension, McDowell Road, Cooper Road, and McClure Road on its way to the Pearl River.
The City of Jackson has plugged the line to stop the discharge and is using pumps to reroute the sewage until a permanent repair can be made. MDEQ is working with city officials to find a permanent solution. MDEQ staff have begun monitoring bacteria levels and water quality in Caney Creek and will revise the advisory as needed.
A temporary water contact advisory issued December 15 for Purple Creek in northeast Jackson is still in effect for Purple Creek at Sedgewick Drive downstream to the confluence with the Pearl River.
