MDEQ AND MDMR ISSUE CLOSURE FOR BAYOU CASOTTE
The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) and the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MDMR) Sunday issued a fishing and water contact closure for Bayou Casotte and the adjacent waters of the Mississippi Sound within 1,000 feet of the mouth of the bayou.
MDEQ staff investigated a fish kill in Bayou Casotte in Jackson County Sunday and as a result issued the closure. The public is advised to avoid these waters and while seafood is not considered to be contaminated, fishermen are advised not to consume any seafood collected from these waters until further notice.
This precautionary closure was issued to protect the public from potentially harmful water conditions and does not affect navigation interests. MDEQ and MDMR will continue to monitor the bayou and adjacent waters and will modify or lift the closure as conditions warrant.
