MDEQ HOSTS HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION SITE

(JACKSON, Miss.) – The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) will provide a household hazardous waste collection site for tornado affected residents of Smithville and the surrounding area daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. beginning Wednesday, May 11. Current plans are for the site to remain open through Sunday, May 14, subject to the community's needs and the participation by the public in the collection program. The collection site is located at the City of Smithville Wastewater Facility on Cemetery Road.

Household hazardous wastes include household chemical items, certain electronic wastes, and other materials in the home that may be harmful to pets or children.

Area residents can drop off the following types of household hazardous waste items at the site including:

· Household chemicals, bleach, and cleaners
· Insecticides and herbicides
· Household poisons
· Pool chemicals
· Used oil and gasoline
· Paints, thinner, varnish and solvents
· Thermostats, lighting ballasts, capacitors and other similar items
· Electronic wastes such as televisions, cell phones, and computers
· Large, bulky household appliances – such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers, and hot water heaters

Directions to the City of Smithville Wastewater Facility: turn off Highway 25 going west onto Cemetery Road, drive down Cemetery Road, and the collection site will be set up at the end of Cemetery Road.
