MDEQ ISSUES TEMPORARY ADVISORY FOR HANGING MOSS CREEK IN JACKSON

(JACKSON, Miss.) –The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) issued a temporary water contact advisory Monday for a section of Hanging Moss Creek in Jackson. The advisory is issued due to a broken 10 inch gravity wastewater line at Sheffield Drive and Ridgewood Road. The advisory extends from the Hanging Moss Creek bridge at I-55 to the confluence with the Pearl River.

The City of Jackson is using a pump to bypass around the break back into the collection system and constructing a temporary earthen embankment across Hanging Moss Creek to prevent any of the sewage from going into the Pearl River. The water will be pumped from the creek into an interceptor line.

MDEQ staff has begun to monitor bacteria levels and water quality in the creek and will revise the advisory as needed. MDEQ recommends that people avoid water contact recreation such as swimming or wading in these waters. In addition, people should avoid eating fish from these waters until further notice.
