MDEQ ISSUES TEMPORARY ADVISORY FOR BIG SUNFLOWER RIVER IN COAHOMA COUNTY
(JACKSON, Miss.) –The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) issued a temporary water contact advisory Friday for a portion of the Big Sunflower River in Coahoma County. The advisory is a result of problems associated with the Clarksdale Wastewater Treatment Plant and subsequent effluent discharges. The advisory extends from the discharge point for the Wastewater Treatment Plant at 1905 Sunflower Avenue to the Hopson-Pixley Road bridge over the Big Sunflower River.
MDEQ recommends that people avoid water contact recreation such as swimming, boating, or wading in these waters. In addition, people should avoid eating fish from these waters until further notice.
MDEQ staff has begun to monitor bacteria levels and water quality in the river and will revise the advisory and the boundaries as needed.
