MDEQ CONTINUES TEMPORARY ADVISORY FOR BIG SUNFLOWER RIVER IN COAHOMA COUNTY

(JACKSON, Miss.) –A water contact advisory issued April 27 by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) remains in effect for a portion of the Big Sunflower River in Coahoma County. Fecal coliform sampling done June 7 by MDEQ staff indicates that people should avoid water contact recreation such as swimming, boating, or wading and should not eat fish from these waters until further notice.

The advisory has been expanded to extend from the discharge point for the Wastewater Treatment Plant at 1905 Sunflower Avenue to the Counts Spur Bridge over the Big Sunflower River.

The advisory is a result of problems associated with the Clarksdale Wastewater Treatment Plant and subsequent effluent discharges. MDEQ continues to work with the city to ensure the plant’s problems are corrected.
