The Stories in Stone Exhibit of the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science represents the efforts of many people and organizations, especially the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, Office of Geology, to bring together the state’s best fossil specimens in order to tell the story of Mississippi’s geologic past and of the history of life itself. Some of the fossils on display are from the Museum’s collections; some are from the collections of other institutions; some are from private collections; and some are replicas of specimens in other museums. So why were these particular fossils chosen among so many thousands of candidates and what do they tell us about Mississippi’s ancient past? Space limitations within the Stories in Stone Exhibit allow for little more than the citations of the fossils’ common and scientific names. Here we give the rest of the story.
